Writing for Suite 101 and Coming Up with Article Ideas

by RS on September 4, 2009

I recently joined Suite 101 with the hope to make some money. During a three month period, I’m supposed to come up with 10 topics and write cohesive and informative articles. Pretty easy, right? Well, if you look at what’s posted it isn’t a piece of cake. The problem is that your article can be deriviative of another one and why bother to write a piece that says the same old, same-old.  So for the past few days, I’ve been trying to come up with some topics. I’ve classified them into categories: Pets, Nutrition, Fitness, History, Books etc. Now I have to figure out what to write about. I do have three ideas, but I need seven more.

The main issue I have with sites like Suite 101 is that it works on a pay per click basis. If your article doesn’t drive enough traffic to your page and no one clicks on the ads posted then essentially you’re writing for free. So is it worth it? My husband would say not to waste my time. I’ve already written for numerous outlets that pay nothing or very little just to get clips. I, on the other hand, have conflicting feelings. Maybe I’ll get lucky and write an article that generates traffic and click-throughs. It might be worth a try, but there’s also a catch Suite 101 has the rights to the piece for one year. Do I really want to spend the time and energy to write a great piece and not be able to sell it to another publication that will buy it and actually pay me?

I don’t know, but I do know I better start writing if I don’t want to get booted from the site.
